Anita Flower*

Anchorage resident Anita Flower, 80, died April 7, 2011, at Providence Alaska Medical Center., Please join her family and friends for a celebration of life at, Post 9981, 12870 Old Seward Highway, Suite 109, at 5:30 p.m. April 28. In a private ceremony with her family, her ashes will be spread over Sleeping Lady and Potter Marsh., She was preceded in death by her son, John Henry Ballou., She is survived by her sister, Caroline and Stan Murphey; her children, son, James and Kelly Blacketer of Paradise, Calif., daughter, Paula and James Munjar of Wautuga, Texas, son, "Ray" Raymond and LeAnne Ballou of Anchorage, son, Bruce and Kate Ballou of Paradise, Calif., daughter, Barbara Murray of Orangevale, Calif., daughter, Linda and Donald Cossairt of Anchorage; grandchildren, Holly Schweifler, Deborah and Daron Jackson, Sarah Blacketer, Sheri and Chris Paulson, Daniel Solano, Melissa Dutter, Sara and Zach Osborne, Jesse and Quinn Ballou, Jasmine Ballou, Robert and Jonathan Murray, Adrean La Rue and Michael Pedersen, David and Stefanie Cossairt; great-grandchildren, Connor Schweifler, Wyatt Jackson, Jazmyn Blacketer, Cody, Nicole and Courtney Paulson, Jacob and Kelsey Fishbach., Anita was born Oct. 7, 1930, in La Mar, Colo., to Jesse and Ida May Wright. She received her nursing degree at Butte College in Oroville, Calif. In 1980, she moved to Alaska, where she continued her passion for nursing at Providence hospital and retired after 27 years in 2007. Nursing was Anita's identity; she often said, "I can't change the world, but I can make a difference one life at a time.", Anita founded the Providence craft bazaar. She was an accomplished artist and had a talent for mastering many crafts, including beading, sewing, painting, etc. Her family would like to extend its gratitude to the employees of Dr. Haverling, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Heart Institute and Alaska Spine Institute for their care and compassion of every patient., In lieu of flowers, please donate to Providence Alaska Foundation,


 


 

April Kildaire*

Anchorage resident April Marie Kildaire died April 16, 2011. After struggling with several medical and emotional issues, she chose to take her own life on her 38th birthday., She was born to William and Karen Marcum on April 16, 1973, in Lima, Ohio. April came to Alaska with Mom, Dad, and older sister Laurie when her father was stationed here in 1976. She attended Ocean View Elementary, Hanshew, Service High School and then graduated in Ohio from Bluffton High School. April lived in Alaska several times and was stationed here with her husband Michael in 2009 with the U.S. Army. April was living with friends Bob and Robin Radlein at the time of her death. April's passions were fantasy gaming with her many friends and playing with her cat "Mort." She also enjoyed reading and sketching., April is survived by her father, William Marcum, of Tucson, Ariz.; mother, Karen Gaines; stepfather, David Gaines; sister, Laurie Tanner; stepsisters, Sarah and Susanna Gaines, all from Anchorage; and her estranged husband, Michael Kildaire, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson., April's last thoughts were of others, and the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to homeless shelters. No formal service will be held.


 


 

Caroline Wohlforth*

Caroline Penniman Wohlforth, a community leader for more than 45 years, died at home in Anchorage on Monday, April 18, 2011, of metastatic breast cancer, while surrounded by her family. She was 78., Wohlforth was a pioneer of alternative education in Anchorage, a founder of schools and community organizations, and a leader in her church for decades. She served on the Anchorage School Board from 1975 to 1979, two of those years as president., In recent months, she had been honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement, had been inducted in the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame, and was the first recipient, with Marilyn Conaway, of the Annual Wohlforth-Conaway Vision of Education Award, given by Steller Secondary School, which she was instrumental in founding., Wohlforth was born Caroline Barbour Penniman on May 9, 1932, in Wilmington, Del. Her father was a noted Episcopal theologian, the Rev. Dr. Charles F. Penniman., Caroline remained deeply involved in the Episcopal church throughout her life, including serving as a board member, writer and editor for the Educational Center, of Charlotte, N.C., and St. Louis, Mo., which continues to carry on her father's teachings., Wohlforth graduated from Smith College with a bachelor's degree in English in 1954, and received a master's degree from, . She married Eric Wohlforth, an attorney, in 1957. They moved with their two sons from New York City to Anchorage in 1966., Community involvement was one of Wohlforth's first orders of business upon becoming an Alaskan. She helped found Planned Parenthood of Alaska in the 1960s., When Eric became Commissioner of Revenue under Gov. Bill Egan in 1970, the family moved to Juneau and Caroline there observed a new open-classroom educational concept. Returning to Anchorage a few years later, Wohlforth helped start Chugach Optional Elementary School on the same model., She was the chair of the Committee for Alternative Secondary Education, which successfully advocated for the founding of Steller Secondary School in the mid-1970s. The group's first meeting took place around her kitchen table and the school's first students included her son, Evans., School Superintendent Carol Comeau recently credited that work with spurring the development of a broad array of school choices that now exist in the Anchorage School District. Wohlforth supported many of them in the beginning stages, including back-to-basics and Montessori models, because she believed parents should be able to choose the best educational method for their own children., Wohlforth's community efforts beyond education included participation in the founding of KSKA Public Radio and Childcare Connection, now known as Thread. She led the FISH food pantry for many years, and personally delivered food to needy families with Eric at her side for more than three decades., Wohlforth's deepest and most lasting contributions were at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Anchorage, where she performed roles ranging from church secretary and helper to the bereaved, to Senior Warden, the church's top lay leader., She was chair of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska, twice chaired the Bishop Selection Committee for the diocese, and repeatedly served as a consultant to Episcopal parishes in Alaska when they selected new clergy., Friends recalled Wohlforth's warm and inclusive personality, and her humility, as key to her ability to solve problems in groups. Former Gov. Tony Knowles recently credited Wohlforth with ending strife between the municipality and the school district in the 1970s with her skill of calmly bringing people together., Wohlforth leaves her husband, Eric, who continues to practice law in Anchorage; son, Evans, an attorney in Newark, N.J, his wife, Naomi, a violinist with the New Jersey Symphony; their children, Samuel and Mollie; and son Charles, a writer in Anchorage and former member of the Anchorage Assembly, his wife, Barbara, a teacher, and their children, Robin, Julia, Joseph and Becky. She is also survived by her brother, Reverend Charles F. Penniman Jr., of Philadelphia., A funeral service is planned for Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church., In lieu of flowers, St. Mary's will accept contributions to the Caroline Wohlforth Memorial Fund, at 2222 E. Dale Brabec*

Anchorage resident Dale Brabec, 41, died on April 19, 2011, on Bird Ridge., A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the West High School Auditorium. The Rev. Brian Parker will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, in Dale's memory, please bring a piece of firewood., Dale was born Dec. 11, 1969, in Kansas City, Mo. He moved to Alaska in August of 2001 and began working for the Anchorage School District., Dale is survived by his wife, Amy Brabec; son, Duncan Brabec; mother, Jean Brabec; father, Bob Brabec; sister Jennifer with her husband, Joe Merenda, and their family; along with other family and friends in Colorado and N.H., Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel,


 


 

David Claytor*

Former Alaska resident David Lee Claytor, born Aug. 4., 1945, in Wellington, Kan., died in his sleep at his home in Datil, New Mexico, on March 14, 2011., David was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Alice, his sister-in-law Kay and his granddaughter Tammy Lynn. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marlyne Claytor, daughters Belinda Claytor, Faith Ann Kingsbury and Julie Hastings, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren with one on the way and his brother, Richard Claytor., David joined the Alaska Army National Guard in Petersburg in 1984. At the time of his retirement in 1999 he was a member of HHC, 207 Infantry Group in Anchorage.


 


 

DeWayne Owen

DeWayne J. Owen, 62, died of a heart attack at home on April 13, 2011. A service will be held Friday, April 22, 2011 at 10:30a.m. at Ft Richardson National Cemetery with military honors. 


 


 

Dean Deegan*

Longtime Anchorage resident Dean Deegan, 86, died April 16, 2011, at a local hospital after a yearlong battle with cancer., A funeral Mass will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011, at Holy Family Cathedral with the Rev. Francis Hung Le officiating. Pallbearers will be his sons Gary and Michael Deegan, and his grandsons David and Christopher Deegan., Mr. Deegan was born September 27, 1924, in Elma, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Elma and served in the, during, . He entered college at Drake University and graduated with the class of 1950. He married Donna Schoo in 1950 and worked as a CPA with Lytle & Green Construction Company in Des Moines. In 1952 they drove up the Alaska Highway to move to Anchorage. He owned and was a partner in many successful businesses, the last as president of Alaska Wholesale from 1968 until he retired in 1990. He was a member of Holy Family Cathedral., He enjoyed spending time relaxing at the family's cabin at Big Lake and working on many improvement projects. He also enjoyed reading and keeping up with current events. His family wrote, "He was a devoted family man, father and grandfather.", Mr. Deegan is survived by his sons, Gary of Anchorage and Michael from Gainesville, Fla.; grandsons, David and Christopher Deegan of Anchorage; sister, Maybeth Wilson of Waterloo, Iowa., He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Deegan, and his brothers, Lee and Neil., In lieu of flowers, a donation to Catholic Social Services in Anchorage would be appreciated., Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel,


 


 

Gloria Cadigan*

Gloria Jean Cadigan, 81, died April 19, 2011, in the company of family at Providence Alaska Medical Center., Born Gloria Jean Campbell on June 10, 1929, in San Francisco, she moved to Anchorage in 1956. In 1959, she started Magic Foods, a sandwich delivery service that she sold, and moved on to work at and manage collection agencies. She also opened two more restaurants., Gloria was family oriented and an excellent cook, and she was famous for her beans and cornbread. Her 72-pound king from the Kenai was her proudest moment in 45 years of fishing., Gloria is survived by her two sons, Dan and Mike Gibeau of Anchorage; daughters-in-law, Judy and Linda Gibeau of Anchorage; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kim and Bill Bivins of Anchorage; grandson, Maynard Gibeau of Anchorage; great granddaughter, Kaylee Gibeau and great grandson, David Gibeau, both of Anchorage; one sister, Diana Schulte, Cathedral City, Calif.; nephew, Dennis Covel, Palmer; niece, Pam Henry of Seldovia and several grand nieces and nephews., She was preceded in death by her mother, Nell Dossett; father, Hank Dossett; husband, Pat Cadigan; grandson, David Gibeau; and granddaughter-in-law, Tiffany Gibeau., Gloria did not want a funeral or service, and her cremains will be spread in the Kenai River., Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Alaska,


 


 

Karen Brown*

Longtime Alaskan Karen Lee Brown, 70, died March 31, 2011, at Providence Extended Care Center in Anchorage after a long illness., A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. May 15, 2011, at La Cabana Restaurant, 312 E. Fourth Ave., Karen was born Sept. 24, 1940, in Plattsburg, N.Y., to Harold and Lucille Bouyea., Karen moved from New York to Alaska with her family in 1970., She worked at Anchorage Community Hospital, Humana Hospital and Debenham Electric, and then for neurologists Dr. Janice Kastella and Dr. Tom Gordon for many years until she retired in 2002., She enjoyed many activities, including decorative painting, crocheting, beautiful ceramics and intricate woodworking. Karen could make a Dremel tool work like an extension of her finger. She was also an accomplished bowler with a 200-point average. Karen enjoyed visiting with family and friends and loved animals., Karen is survived by her sister, Nancy (Charles) Murphy; children and their spouses, James (Julie) Lackey of Kenai, Jeffrey (Patty) Lackey of Anchorage and Katherine Lackey of Wasilla; grandchildren, Trisha (Aaron) Trenton, Jessica, Nichole (Earnest) Terrell, Jaime, Shannon and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren, Sabrena, Cali, Conner and Jaci; her many nieces and nephews; and of course her beloved dog, Nikki., She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert., Arrangements by Cremation Society of Alaska,

Stephen Guiel*

Anchorage resident Stephen Torsten Guiel, 55, died Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Alaska Regional Hospital., Graveside services will be held noon today (Friday, April 22) at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with military honors. Please meet at the Fort Richardson gate (off the Glenn Highway) at 11:30 a.m., Stephen was born Aug. 1, 1955, at Burtonwood AFB, Warrington, Lancashire, England. He graduated from Cabrillo Senior High School at Vandenberg Village, Calif. He attended Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, Calif., and the University of Maryland. He enlisted in the U.S., on Oct. 21, 1975, and retired August, 1995. He moved to Alaska in May, 1986. He married Ofelia Insenia Urias on Feb. 22, 1990 in Anchorage., He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and guns., His family wrote: "He had a lifelong love for the outdoors, which was instilled in him by his father. Hunting was his first love, but in later years, he enjoyed fly-fishing for trout and salmon. He loved to cook for family and friends. Stephen was well known on the Guns & Game forum as SwedeSteve and was well known at The New Gun Trader. He was one of those rare individuals who could make an instant connection with anybody. Stephen was very proud of his Swedish heritage on his mother's side. His ancestry included soldiers who fought in the American Revolution and one ancestor who arrived on the Mayflower to settle the New World.", Stephen is survived by his wife, Ofelia; son, Jesse; daughter, Susan; son, Buddy; daughter, Lisa; and grandchildren, Devin, Cody, Marissa, Christian, and Shaniah, all of Alaska; father, William H. Guiel, Wash.; mother, Carol Natalie Lund, Calif.; two brothers, William D. Guiel and Paul A. Guiel, Wash.; and one sister, Eleanor I. Verona Langsdorf*

Anchorage resident Verona "Teddi" Langsdorf, 101, died March 13, 2011, at Fine Pearle Assisted Living., Her ashes will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash., next to husband Robert and adopted daughter Anna Lee. An Anchorage celebration of Teddi's life will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home of Gloria Kron, 1910 Shore Drive, 349-1910., Teddi was born June 19, 1909, in Melstone, Mont., the 13th of 14 children. Her family had settled in Montana from Oregon in 1892. Her father, Byron Virgil Dunn, drove a stagecoach between Montana and the Oregon coast, carrying the mail. Her mother, Mary Cole, cared for the family on the ranch, where racehorses were bred and sold., Teddi married the boy from the ranch next door, Fred Keith. They had one son, Fred Jr. They also adopted a little girl, Gloria, in 1946. Teddi and Fred eventually divorced., In 1957, Teddi married again, this time to Robert G. Langsdorf. He worked in the aviation industry and was an A&E mechanic on the DEW Line in Barrow. In 1958, she and her daughter drove to Fairbanks on the Alaska Highway in a 1957 Ford Fairlane., Teddi and Robert elected to become licensed foster parents for the state of Alaska. With subsistence hunting, fishing, berry gathering and growing yearly gardens, the Langsdorfs cared and nurtured more than 1,000 children from all over the state. One 9-month-old baby from Dillingham was not allowed to return home from the hospital; they took her in and eventually adopted Anna Lee Nelson, who lived with them until she died., In 1995, the Langsdorfs retired to Auburn, Wash. Robert was paralyzed in a boating accident and Teddi, without any assistance, cared for her husband. After Robert's and Anna's deaths in 2002, Teddi returned to Anchorage and lived in her own little house in South Anchorage until after her 100th birthday. She then lived at Providence Horizon House. In late 2010, she moved to Fine Pearle Assisted Living and was lovingly cared for by Pearlita and her family., The services provided by Providence Hospice are very much appreciated by Teddi's family., The family is thankful for Teddi's companions, Mary Oxley and Kate Rodeck, who became her extended family., Teddi was a blessing and a spark of light to many souls in this world and she will be missed., Survivors are her son, Fred Keith Jr. (Dorothy); daughter, Gloria Kron (Denny); grandchildren, Daralene Capps (Chris), Stephanie Kron-Raffetto (John), Ardeana Patrick (Frank), Dayle-Mary Keith, Kelli Keith and Korinn Siwicke (Matt); and 10 great-grandchildren., Teddi was preceded in death by her parents; 13 siblings; two husbands; and one daughter., In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Hospice, 3435 E.
